Not Halal
The evidence confirms a prohibited ingredient, source or process under our rules.
Under Review
We do not yet have enough reliable information to decide.
Mashbooh
We investigated the product, but an important halal concern remains unresolved.
Important: Under Review and Mashbooh do not mean that a product is Not Halal.
How we check products
Depending on the product, we may use:
- A current halal certificate covering the exact product and manufacturing site
- Written information supplied by the manufacturer
- Official ingredients and product specifications
- Details about slaughter, processing, cleaning and shared production lines
- Current product packaging
We do not copy a status from a similar product. A statement about one product applies to a whole range only when the manufacturer clearly confirms that scope.
Halal certificates
- Current certificates from FIANZ, NZIDT and JAKIM are accepted when they can be verified and cover the exact product and manufacturing site.
- Overseas certificates are accepted when the certifier is currently recognised by JAKIM and the certificate's scope is verified.
- HCS-certified products are reviewed individually, especially meat and poultry, because the production and slaughter process must meet our rules.
- Other or unverifiable certificates require further review.
- A halal logo by itself is not enough if it cannot be authenticated.
- A certificate does not override a prohibited ingredient or an unacceptable process.
Meat and poultry
- Meat and poultry require clear evidence of an acceptable halal slaughter process.
- Meat is Not Halal when halal slaughter cannot be confirmed.
- Mechanically slaughtered poultry is Not Halal without individual confirmation that every bird is alive at the time of slaughter.
- Scholars differ on mechanical slaughter. Users who follow another recognised opinion may ask a trusted local scholar.
- Gelatine, animal rennet, animal fat, stock and similar ingredients require a confirmed halal source.
Ingredients and processing
- Pork, lard, blood and ingredients from prohibited animals are Not Halal.
- Carmine, cochineal and E120 are treated as Not Halal.
- A normal seasoning amount of nutmeg in a mixed food is acceptable when every other ingredient and process is acceptable.
- Pure nutmeg and concentrated nutmeg extracts, oils or supplements are Not Halal.
- Vegetarian or vegan labelling does not automatically make a product Halal.
- Shared production with non-halal products requires confirmed cleaning and separation controls.
Alcohol and ethanol
- Wine, beer, sake, liqueur and other intoxicating drinks used as ingredients are Not Halal. Cooking does not change this decision.
- Non-intoxicating traces created naturally in food are acceptable.
- Ethanol used only as a processing aid, solvent or flavour carrier can be acceptable when there is no practical halal alternative, it is not sourced from an alcoholic drink, and the finished product cannot intoxicate.
- If a real ethanol concern remains unresolved after investigation, the product is Mashbooh rather than automatically Not Halal.

Ingredients, manufacturing methods and certificates can change. We reassess a product when reliable new information becomes available and correct its status when necessary.
